James 4:7–10 (The Message) “So let God work his will in you. Yell a loud no to the Devil and watch him scamper. Say a quiet yes to God and he’ll be there in no time. Quit dabbling in sin. Purify your inner life. Quit playing the field. Hit bottom, and cry your eyes out. The fun and games are over. Get serious, really serious. Get down on your knees before the Master; it’s the only way you’ll get on your feet.”
There comes a point in every believer’s life when God calls us back to Himself, not with harshness, but with holy urgency. James’ words in this passage are not meant to condemn but to awaken. They remind us that spiritual renewal doesn’t happen by accident, it’s a choice to surrender, to resist evil, and to return to God’s embrace.
Maybe lately you’ve felt distant from the Lord, worn out by distractions, temptations, or self-reliance. The good news is: God hasn’t moved. He’s still near, waiting for you to draw close again. Today, James invites us to do just that, to get serious about our walk and rediscover the joy of living under God’s will.
1. Let God Work His Will in You
> “So let God work his will in you.”
Spiritual strength begins with surrender. The first step in getting back to God’s heart isn’t doing more, it’s letting go more. God can’t fill hands that are still holding onto control.
Philippians 2:13 (NIV) reminds us, “For it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.” Our job is cooperation, not competition with God’s Spirit.
When we yield our plans, pride, and pace to Him, we make room for His grace to reshape our hearts. Maybe you’ve been trying to fix everything yourself, this is your reminder: let God do what only He can do.
2. Resist the Enemy and Draw Near to God
> “Yell a loud no to the Devil and watch him scamper. Say a quiet yes to God and he’ll be there in no time.”
James paints a vivid picture here, resisting the devil isn’t passive. It’s a loud “no” backed by a lifestyle of “yes” to God. Every time you choose obedience over temptation, truth over compromise, you’re telling the enemy he has no place in your life.
1 Peter 5:8–9 (NIV) says, “Resist him, standing firm in the faith…” The devil flees from believers who know where their authority comes from, in Christ.
And when you whisper a “yes” to God, even a trembling one, He meets you instantly with grace. He never delays His presence; He delights in your return. No matter how far you’ve wandered, one “yes” can bring you right back to His side.
3. Get Serious About Your Walk with God
> “Quit dabbling in sin. Purify your inner life. Quit playing the field… Get down on your knees before the Master; it’s the only way you’ll get on your feet.”
James isn’t calling for despair, he’s calling for depth. There’s a difference between casual Christianity and committed discipleship. The world invites us to “play the field,” but God calls us to wholehearted devotion.
Psalm 51:10 (NIV) echoes this: “Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.” Purity begins within, where only God can reach.
When we humble ourselves, repentance becomes a doorway, not a dead end. It’s how we rise again, stronger, cleaner, and closer to Jesus.
Conclusion: Come Close, He’s Waiting
James’ words might sound strong, but they’re soaked in hope. God doesn’t ask us to draw near because He’s angry; He asks because He misses us. He longs for intimacy, for partnership, for your heart.
This week, take time to quiet your heart before God. Surrender what’s been holding you back. Say “no” to the enemy’s lies and “yes” to God’s presence. Maybe that means setting aside extra prayer time, reconciling a relationship, or simply admitting your need for Him again.
Get down on your knees, because that’s where you’ll find your strength.
And when you rise, you’ll rise renewed, restored, and ready to walk in His will again.
