Many people today feel ashamed of their faith, afraid of what others might think or say. But Paul reminds us that when we understand what the Gospel truly is, shame fades and confidence grows.

The Apostle Paul wrote these words from the heart of a man who had been transformed by grace. Once a persecutor of the church, Paul now boldly proclaimed the message he once tried to destroy. Why? Because he had discovered that the Gospel, the good news of Jesus Christ, is not just a message of hope; it is the very power of God to save and change lives.

Romans 1:16–17 (ESV)

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, ‘The righteous shall live by faith.’”

Many people today feel ashamed of their faith, afraid of what others might think or say. But Paul reminds us that when we understand what the Gospel truly is, shame fades and confidence grows. The same God who changed Paul’s heart is still changing hearts today through His power, His righteousness, and our faith.

The Gospel: Euangelion. The Good News of God’s Grace

The word “Gospel” in Greek is εὐαγγέλιον (euangelion), meaning “good news” or “glad tidings.” It was often used in the ancient world to announce the birth of a king or victory in battle. But Paul uses it to describe something far greater, the good news that Jesus Christ has conquered sin, death, and the grave (1 Corinthians 15:1–4).

The Gospel is not advice on how to live better; it’s an announcement of what God has already done through His Son. It declares that salvation is available to everyone who believes, Jew and Gentile alike.

In a world filled with bad news, the Gospel stands as the ultimate good news: God has come near to rescue us, forgive us, and give us new life. As Jesus said in Mark 1:15, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”

The Power of God: Dynamis. God’s Explosive Strength to Save

Paul calls the Gospel “the power of God for salvation.” The Greek word here is δύναμις (dynamis), from which we get the English word “dynamite.” It speaks of divine, miraculous power, the kind that changes hearts, breaks chains, and brings the dead to life.

The Gospel isn’t weak or outdated; it’s the living, active power of God. It doesn’t just inspire us, it transforms us. Paul experienced that power firsthand when God turned him from a persecutor into a preacher.

Romans 8:11 reminds us, “The Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you.” The same power that raised Christ now works in every believer. No sin is too deep, no heart too hard, no situation too hopeless for the dynamis of God’s grace.

The Righteousness of God: Dikaiosynē Theou. Made Right by Faith

Paul goes on to say that in the Gospel, “the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith.” The Greek word δικαιοσύνη (dikaiosynē) means “being made right or justified before God.”

This righteousness is not something we earn, it’s something we receive. It’s a gift, not a reward. As Paul later explains in Romans 3:22, “This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe.”

Our faith, πίστις (pistis) in Greek, means more than mental belief; it’s trust, confidence, and ongoing reliance on God. Faith is the open hand that receives God’s gift of grace.

When we place our faith in Christ, God clothes us in His righteousness (2 Corinthians 5:21). That means when God looks at you, He no longer sees your sin or failures, He sees the perfect righteousness of His Son.

In closing, “the righteous shall live by faith.” This verse, first spoken in Habakkuk 2:4 and echoed by Paul, reminds us that faith is not a one-time event, it’s a lifestyle. We live, move, and stand in faith every single day.

Faith trusts when we can’t see.
Faith obeys when it’s hard.
Faith believes that God’s promises are true, even when circumstances say otherwise.

So don’t let fear or doubt stop you. Live unashamed on the Gospel. Let its power work in you. Walk in the righteousness Christ has given you. And hold fast to faith, for through it, the just truly live.

Take a moment today to reflect on where your faith stands. Are you living unashamed of the Gospel? Are you trusting in your strength, or in God’s dynamis power?

Pray and declare today:

“Lord, thank You for the Gospel that saves and transforms. Help me to live boldly in Your righteousness and to walk each day by faith. I trust Your power at work in me, and I choose to live unashamed of You.”

Live by faith, walk in His power, and let the good news of Jesus shine through your life today.
